Events Management students onsite at Afterdark

Learning about events in the classroom is one thing, but to get a real idea of scale and the complexities of how an event site works, it’s really key to see them in action. There is a major emphasis placed on employability and being industry-ready within the Events Management degree course so connecting with events in a practical way such as site visits is great way to do this.


On Monday 5th November 2018 our students visited the site build for Sheffield’s largest fireworks event, Afterdark. The event has been running at Sheffield’s Don Valley Bowl for over 20 years by Scott Barton, who was on hand with his site Safety Officer, Guy Naylor to talk through the site layout, issues and challenges of delivering an outdoor event for upto 20,000 people. The visit was part of Managing Festivals and Outdoor Events module, lead by Mark Norman and Charlotte Rowley. As part of the module, the students are developing their own ideas for an outdoor event on the site, so to see a full event production on site really helped them to get a true idea of the scale and detail needed for an event of this size. The following evening students were able to attend the event to see how all the work was brought together.

Before the visit took place, Scott Barton gave a guest lecture to the module on his history with the event and how it has developed over the years.
